New homes, unfinished yards
Tri Pointe's listing notes that homes generally come without backyard hardscape or landscaping, so many Altis owners are finishing a yard from scratch. Every home is single-story, which makes it easier to design a backyard with no steps, and the community's views of San Gorgonio Mountain are worth keeping in mind as you plan.
Patio covers
On a single-story home, an attached cover can tie in near the roofline for more height. Beaumont sits in the San Gorgonio Pass, so ask any cover installer what wind load the cover is engineered for and how the posts are anchored. Plan fans or lights before installation. More on patio covers.
Pavers and patios
Design for no trip edges: flat-surface pavers, flush transitions to turf or planting, and ramps instead of steps where possible. A walkway to the side gate wide enough for a wheelchair or walker is worth planning even if nobody needs it yet. More on pavers.
Artificial turf
Turf removes mowing. Keep it flush with the patio, and choose a product that drains well. Wind means edges need to be well secured. More on turf.
Landscaping
Choose low plants on the side of the yard facing the mountains so views stay open, and put taller shrubs where you want privacy or wind protection. Drip irrigation on a smart controller keeps upkeep light. More on landscaping.
HOA approval
Altis has an HOA (about $290 to $330 a month). Get the design guidelines from your HOA's management company before you collect quotes, and don't schedule work until approval is in writing. Keep the side-yard swale open, slope paving away from the house, and keep soil and paving below the weep screed at the base of the stucco. Our HOA, wind, and drainage guide covers the details.
Common questions
Do Altis homes come with a finished backyard?
Generally not. Tri Pointe's listing says homes generally come without backyard hardscape or landscaping.
How do I design a backyard with no steps?
Keep patio, paths, and turf at the same level with flush transitions, and use gentle slopes instead of steps.
Will landscaping block my mountain view?
Not if you plan for it. Keep plants low on the view side and use taller ones for privacy elsewhere.
Do I need a permit for a patio cover?
Yes, from the City of Beaumont, plus HOA approval.
